City Of Greifswald

The emergence of the town can be traced back to the foundation of the Eldena Monastery by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. It is through the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich – the town’s most famous son – that the ruins of this monastery became world famous as the epitome of German Romanticism. For centuries, the historic old town’s silhouette has been dominated by three grand Gothic brick churches: St. Mary, St. Nikolai and St. Jakobi.
Thanks to its Alma Mater – founded in 1456, which makes it one of the oldest universities in Central Europe – modern Greifswald has always been a young town, filled with bustling activity. More than 12.000 students from all over the world create a lively, cosmopolitan mood and are responsible for the good reputation of Greifswald’s cultural scene and night life. Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University is renowned throughout the world for first class research and important scientific contributions.
